Erica's Story
Fifteen years ago, Erica Domby walked into The Caring Place during one of the most difficult moments of her life. After two years of domestic violence, Erica was ready to take the first steps toward leaving. A counselor from The Caring Place sat beside her, helped her navigate the process of filing for a protective order, and offered something Erica desperately needed in that moment: support without judgment. At the time, Erica was a successful professional who knew how to lead and make difficult decisions. Still, she recalls, “I didn’t know how to leave my abuser.” Her experience is an important reminder that domestic violence does not discriminate based on on neighborhood, education, profession, or success. “The Caring Place made me feel like I had value,” Erica shares. Today, Erica’s story is also one of what can come after survival. In the years since she took that first step, she has gone on to become a CEO, start a company, establish a nonprofit, and build a full and happy life. For years, one of her goals was to someday serve on the Board of The Caring Place and give back to the organization that helped her when she needed it most. Now, she is doing exactly that. Erica hopes that by sharing her story, other survivors can see something that isn't talked about nearly enough: there is another side. There is life after abuse. Survivors can heal, rebuild, thrive, and find joy again. We are deeply grateful to Erica for trusting us with her story, for bringing her experience and leadership to our Board, and for helping us continue to create a place where survivors are reminded of their value and supported as they take their own first steps forward.
